What is a Mini Session?
A mini session is a condensed 20-minute photo shoot that allows you to get a few high-quality images in a short amount of time. As the host of a mini session, I choose the location ahead of time and am able to line up multiple clients back-to-back to offer a more affordable photoshoot. A shorter session also means quicker turn around time for your edited gallery. Mini sessions are ideal for holiday cards and other seasonal events. I offer yearly holiday mini sessions in the fall but have also hosted Mother's Day minis and summer beach minis. If you have a suggestion for future mini sessions theme, feel free to get in touch!
How to Prepare
Since mini sessions are booked back-to-back, it's very important to be on time for your session. Be sure to have your family ready to go and plan to arrive 10 minutes early to find parking and our designated meeting spot (I will communicate this as we get closer to your session). Be sure to let me know of any specific requests or concerns ahead of time - you can send me a quick email or let me know on your questionnaire upon booking. Most importantly, try not to put too much pressure on yourselves or your family for the session. The best photos often result from genuine smiles and interactions.
Here are a few other ways to prepare for your session before leaving the house:
- Leave ample time to arrive at your location
- Wipe noses and faces of little ones
- Remove smart watches and hair ties from wrists
- Plan to remove your cell phones, keys and wallets from your pockets during the session
- Check that jewelry clasps are behind your neck

What to Wear
For mini sessions, you should opt for coordinated yet relaxed outfits. I suggest choosing a color palette that complements the setting and season, avoiding overly bright or busy patterns. Neutral tones like beige, grey, or soft pastels work well for a timeless look, while subtle patterns like stripes or checks can add interest. Aim for a cohesive look without being too matchy-matchy. Remember that comfort is key to capturing your moments.
Feel free to browse galleries on my Instagram or website for outfit inspiration. If you're feeling particularly stuck, shoot me a quick email and I'd be happy to help you come up with a coordinated palette that works for your session!
Some clients choose to pamper themselves with a blowout or a makeup session prior to their photoshoot. While this is completely a personal choice, I suggest doing whatever will make you feel your best for your photos!
What to Expect After Your Session
After your session, I get to work editing your photos! You can expect approximately 20 final edited images delivered to you in a high resolution gallery. I am proud to boast an extremely fast turn around time on my mini sessions and guarantee delivery of your photos two weeks after your session, although they are often available sooner. This allows you plenty of time to order and mail your holiday cards!
Other FAQs
Should we bring our dog?
Absolutely! As you can see, JKPhoto has captured many dogs in photos for holiday cards. I do suggest that if you choose to bring your dog, you also bring a pet helper with you (an extra person who is NOT going to be in the photos). Sometimes our furry friends need a little break and with such a short session, it's helpful for the family to continue their photos while a helper takes care of your furry friend.
What if my kids are having a hard time?
With over ten years of experience as an elementary school teacher, and a baby of my own, I welcome all the joys (and challenges) that children bring! Mini sessions are great for children since they are short and sweet. There might even be a special prize box in store for those excellent listeners :)
*If you are really worried about wrangling up your kiddos, I suggest booking a private photo session in lieu of a mini session as it gives us all more time to work through any major challenges.
What if it rains?
Please be sure to check each mini session date's rain date. If the weather isn't cooperating, I will automatically rebook you to the rain date listed. If you have a conflict with the rain date and there happens to be an open session still available from another mini session day, you are welcome to snag it. If you cannot make the designated rain date and there are no sessions available, I will credit your session fee towards a future photoshoot with JKPhoto.
What if we are late for a very legitimate reason?
It happens ... and I totally get it! However, since mini session schedules are so tightly packed, reschedules are only possible in case of weather issues, as determined by the photographer. If you are unable to attend your reserved mini session due to an unforeseen circumstance, the session credit may be applied towards a full session and not a mini session.
